Q&A With The Author
Q: How long have you been writing?
A: I've been a "serious" writer on and off for the past three or four years. While it was more journalistic than creative,
time at my internship at Mattos Newspapers was the first time that I ever considered maybe doing this for a career.
I wrote in my English classes throughout my time in the lower grades and enjoyed it, but it took me being shaken
from my original path to consider it.
Q: Who are some of your literary heroes? Why?
A: Some of my literary heroes are John Green and Mary Shelley. Interesting duo, yes, but I feel like they
both wrote pieces that I really reacted and related to.
For me, John Green's The Fault in our Stars is so significant. It's a piece that I became so invested in and obsessed
with, and my love for this book brought me so many good memories and served as that initial connection with
people who are still some of my best friends. This book showed me that love exists, even in the most uncertain of
places and circumstances. It's just a beautiful story and it plays with your emotions in the best way.
Frankenstein found its way on my list in a different way. I first came across this book like most. It was summer
reading for my AP English class my junior year. At first, it was just ok. Nothing substantial, but nothing terrible
either. I came across it again my fourth year in college and I was hooked. This text is so rich in imagery and
symbolism that each time I read it, I end up finding something new. Add to that the fact that Shelley was 18 when
she wrote this and that, when looked at closely, there are so many connections to her life, and her feat becomes
even more admirable.
Both of these authors wrote pieces that invite and encourage connection and reflection and that's all I can hope
for for my work.
Q: What are some of the realms you want to explore in your writing?
A. As you can see in my header, I'm very interested in feminist, body positive, horror works. I am a plus-sized woman
myself and I want to re-insert us into genres where we're typically the last to be looked at. I want to create pieces that
are reflective of myself and my experiences in the hopes that those like me realize that they're not alone.
Aside from these topics, I also hope to use my writing as a tool to help me and others work through our cultural
identities and the related debates and issues. I am Mexican, Portuguese, and American. I would definitely consider
myself a white-passing person of color, and while I will never truly be able to understand the struggles of those who
are more visibly people of color, I want to use my privilege to explore the issues that are related to them. I want to
educate others and myself through my works.
I feel like this random mish-mash of things will work together beautifully because, at its core, it's a matter of
destigmatizing these topics and making them things that people are more comfortable discussing.
